Fashion Friday: Silk Blouse Styling

Silk is a beautiful, fluid fabric that should be included in any “fewer, finer” wardrobe. It has an air of elegance and a timeless look that is unlike any other fabric. Incorporate it in a blouse and you may find yourself falling in love with all silk has to offer. When you invest in a quality, well-fitting piece, you’ll wear it for years to come.

Choosing the right blouse starts with the fit and style. We like one that is a slim cut, collared, and sleeved. If it has a little longer tail, that’s a bonus! Choose what is right for you, but make sure it fits your body type well. If you’re on the hunt for a piece to add to your closet, Everlane is a great starting place. They have a wide variety of sustainable blouses or any basics, for that matter. Here are a few we love!

When it comes to styling, the sky is the limit. Your basic blouse can be dressed up or down, be playful or classic, and anything in-between. Get creative and remember layering can be your best friend. Here are four ways to start wearing your silky staple:

  1. Under another basic: Layer your silk blouse with another staple item in your closet such as a blazer or cable-knit sweater. A blazer may seem too “going to the office,” but with the right bottom and shoes, it can be casual. A sweater creates dimension with little bits of your silk, such as a collar or shirttail, peeking out from under your knit.
  2. Paired with a statement: Choose a piece of statement jewelry that can be worn with your silk. If your shirt has a collar, try buttoning all of your buttons and wearing a chunky necklace that you can tuck under the flaps of your collar.
  3. Tucked into place: Pick up your favorite a-line skirt, pencil skirt, or high waisted pant and do a full tuck with your silk. Miix it up with just a front tuck, tail trailing behind or a half tuck. The half is created by tucking one side of your silk into your bottoms. Play around with different types of bottoms and various tucks to develop some go-to styles.
  4. Married with denim: Pair your best dark-washed denim with your silk to create a classic look. For an outfit that mixes soft textures with edgy style, try wearing your silk with distressed denim. The contrast of the two is unexpected and will elevate your style to a new level.
