Mindfulness Monday: The 80/20 Principle

You’ve heard all the talk about sustainable, clean, and “fewer, finer”products, and now it’s time to start implementing them in your life. You have all the tools you need to get started except one. Before you head out and begin making major changes, get comfortable with the 80/20 rule.

A complete one-eighty to any routine or habit isn’t practical in one fell swoop. This applies to changing your buying habits, too. No matter how much your closet and your conscious cry out for it, transforming your closet is an investment. It takes time, careful planning, and $$$.

Even if some of these resources were in abundance, you may get started and quickly realize that a 100% sustainable closet is hard. Some of your most beloved products may not have a great alternative in the sustainable world. This is why you have the 80/20 rule.

80% clean, sustainable products mixed with 20% that are not.

Having this rule in your back pocket gives you a little grace. It relieves some of the guilt that may arise when you can’t purchase ethical products, but still holds you accountable to do your due diligence with the majority of the items you buy.

When following this rule, it’s important to note that you can still find quality products that may not be as clean as other sustainable brands. This rule is not an invitation to go crazy with a ton of pieces from fast fashion stores. You still should strive to maintain the fewer, finer principles with your purchases as much as possible.

The great thing about the 80/20 is the versatility and longevity. You can apply it to all aspects of your life and make it a lifestyle, not just a trend. Try it with your beauty regime! Aim to keep your beauty products 80% clean, and hold on for dear life to that perfect, yet not so clean, mascara you adore. Apply the 80/20 rule to your eating habits with 80% healthy, whole foods and 20% of the less healthy items, like chocolate and more chocolate!

Start this rule now and over time, you’ll see a complete overhaul to your closet and every other aspect of your life to which you apply it. Because you’re giving yourself a little wiggle room to keep with your tried-and-true favorites, you may find this new rule an easy one to follow.
