Mindfulness Monday: Handle Yourself With Care

Stop what you’re doing. Think about the last time you did something for yourself. If it takes more than a few moments to recall, it’s time to make a change.

As a woman, it is increasingly difficult to put tasks aside and dedicate a little time to yourself. But in order to be your best self, you need to refuel the tank that keeps you going. If you don’t, your energy levels will deplete until there’s nothing left.

Don’t wait until you crash and burn. Be proactive and start handling yourself with care now. Here’s how:

1. Move

Aim for at least 30 minutes of movement every day. Yes, every day. This task may seem impossible, but it’s not. We’re not talking daily intense workouts. Your movement can be as simple as walking to your favorite coffee shop instead of driving, or playing outside with your kids or pets in the evening.

Movement is important if you want to maintain a healthy body. When you are physically active your body releases endorphins that make you feel good. You’ll be a happier person and have more energy to tackle the day.


2. Fuel

Instead of focusing on a diet, develop a healthy lifestyle when it comes to fueling your body. Often times a “diet” is not maintainable for life. Instead of looking for quick fixes, find ways to slowly incorporate healthy options. Build your diet out of healthy, whole foods like veggies, fruits, grains, protein, and good fats. Remember to drink a lot of water. The goal should be half your weight in ounces that you drink every day. For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, your goal would be to drink 75 ounces of water each day.

When you fuel your body with healthy food and stay hydrated, you’ll again have more energy and feel better. It is important to listen to your body when it comes to what you’re putting in it. Every body is different so don’t compare yourself to other people. What works for someone else may not work for you.

3. Invest

Learn to know what gives you energy. Do you need time by yourself ? You may be an introvert. Does a night out with friends energize you? You’re most likely an extrovert. Figure out how you recharge and invest in activities that bring you joy at least once a week.

Try something new, hone your skills in a hobby, read a book, or join a fitness class. Whatever the activity may be, open yourself up for personal growth. You’ll get to do something that you love and refuel at the same.


4. Pamper

Give yourself time to freshen up. If there are certain things that make you feel good, like a manicure or message, fit those in when you can. If time and budget doesn’t allow, there are ways to pamper yourself right at home. Try an at-home face mask, pick out a new polish and paint your nails, or exfoliate and take a bath..

As frivolous as it may seem, pampering yourself is another opportunity to give yourself a little love. Inner beauty is important, but sometimes it’s nice to do something that makes you feel beautiful on the outside. This can be an indulgent experience considering these activities are the first to go when time and energy are limited.
