A new year beckons new beginnings, a time for change, a time for improvement. Why not make 2017 the year you make a new kind of resolution? The kind of resolution that will cause you to be more conscious and conscientious about your closet.
This year you can make responsible fashion resolutions to support ethical retailers, to decrease your fashion carbon footprint, and to finally go “Fewer, Finer” with your wardrobe.
Here are a few ways to get started on resolutions that will make the world of fashion a better place for everyone:
Commit to vetting your brands before you buy.
It can be hard to identify ethical companies. Usually, brands that make ethical production a priority will highlight those values somewhere on their website. When you find ethical brands, follow them on social media to see what other trusted companies they promote. At Lions in Four, we highlight brands that we trust and believe provide responsibly sourced products.
Know your labels.
Right now, there is not a great, global system for certifying companies that go above and beyond to be eco- or socially-conscious in fashion. If something says “Fair Trade,” it’s a step in the right direction. Those folks have had to meet a set of good ethical requirements. However, the “Fair Trade” label still does not ensure everyone in the production line is paid living wages.
B-Corp is another label to look for. This certification signals a company has reached certain standards of social and environmental responsibility. This label is still young and gaining ground. If a brand has it, it’s a point in their favor. If a brand is not B-Corp certified, it is not necessarily a point against them.
Go “Fewer, Finer”
“Fewer, Finer” is a term we coined at Lions in Four to describe a commitment to shopping for quality over quantity. Leave “fast fashion” behind in favor of investing in fewer pieces of higher quality from brands that are nice to our planet and our people. Read more about our “fewer, finer” philosophy here.
